LEGACIES OF IMMIGRANTS IN AMERICA

FREE ENTRY

NOVEMBER 8 AT 7PM

LIFEBRIDGE SANCTUARY, ROSENDALE, NY

a concert of vocal music, poetry, and stories from american immigrants past and present

ABOUT

This concert is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the impact immigration has had on our lives as Americans. Whether it's a familiar tune, a poem that embodies the American experience, or a personal story from an immigrant member of our community, you'll hear it at this event. Together with the Lifebridge Foundation, we’re excited to bring you an evening of song and spoken word that will change the way you think about American music, and the people who brought it to us.

Each composer and poet we’ve programmed has made a distinct mark on American music in a variety of genres ranging from pop and folk, to classical and contemporary. By featuring the music of Irving Berlin, Percy Grainger, Igor Stravinsky, Jules Styne, and others, our hope is that you’ll leave our program with a deeper appreciation of the important contributions made by immigrants to American culture. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the lives and impact of these great artists who shaped American history.

ABOUT
THE PERFORMERS

MEET THE PERFORMERS

SZU-YING HUANG

I immigrated from Taiwan in 2009 to pursue higher education in America. I've encountered some difficulties being away from family, but I appreciate deeply that most people I meet welcome me to the US and let me feel that this is my second home.”

Taiwanese Pianist Szu-Ying Huang holds a Master of Music degree in piano performance from the Peabody Institute, and is pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance at University of North Texas. Huang joined the musical staff of AIMS in Graz (Austria) in 2015, and also served as the resident pianist in Chicago Summer Opera in 2016. In fall 2016, Huang became a collaborative piano fellow at Bard College Conservatory of Music.

RACHEL DOEHRING

I didn't know about my family's heritage until a few months ago, when I found out that despite my German last name, I'm actually English and Irish. I realized then how the smallest piece of information can completely change your view of yourself. I hope this concert inspires the audience to reconnect not only with their own immigrant history, but changes their view of the contributions immigrants from everywhere have made to the US .

This season, soprano Rachel Doehring makes her debut with the Albany Symphony.  Most recently, she performed with the new-music group Contemporaneous in NYC, in concert with world renowned pianist Peter Serkin, and has performed a variety of roles ranging from early to new opera. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2016 before joining the Vocal Arts Program at Bard Conservatory.

ELAINE DAIBER

My ancestors came to this country in the 1800s from Germany, England, Ireland and France looking for new opportunities for themselves and their families. I have always believed that immigration has played a vital role in American identity, and am particularly excited to present a concert that highlights some of those immigrant voices that have greatly helped shape our American culture.

This past summer, Elaine Daiber, soprano, was a vocal fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, where she studied with five-time Grammy winner Dawn Upshaw. Past engagements include the role of Paquette in the concert version of Candide (TŌN), and vocalist in Steve Reich’s Drumming (Bard Percussion and Sō Percussion).

MARK CHAN

My mother immigrated to the US in 1976 from Thailand and my dad in 1981 from Hong Kong. Immigration has played an essential role in my identity, not only shaping my immediate family but my personal outlook and viewpoint on life. I believe the American identity is rooted in and shaped by the legacy of immigrants. It is vital to celebrate the lives and stories of immigrants so that we may grow more deeply in touch with who we are.

Baritone Mark Chan spent this summer as a member of the Professional Program at SongFest, where he sang in masterclasses with the world famous pianists and recording artists Graham Johnson and Martin Katz . A Los Angeles native, Chan graduated cum laude from Azusa Pacific University before coming to the Bard College Conservatory Vocal Arts Program. He is a student of seven-time Grammy nominee Sanford Sylvan.
